I lived in Nigeria for my entire childhood. When I came to the United States, my eyes were opened as to how unaware other countries were to the overwhelming economic and cultural challenges of Africa.  It was then I knew I was meant to dedicate my life to bringing a voice to those still in the shadows and to enlighten those totally unaware of the atrocities women and children in Africa endure.

Unknown Assailants Attack UN Peacekeepers in Mali

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is appalled by the terrorist attacks targeting United Nations personnel in Gao, Mali whom are serving with the UN to help restore stability and peace for the people of Mali.  Targets have included a UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission (MINUSMA) camp in Mali and camps of other UN contractors in other areas of the city from China, France, and Mali.  At least 12 peacekeepers have been killed and many more injured.  There is nothing that can excuse these acts of terrorism.  The Secretary-General is calling on the Government of Mali, its partners, and the people of Mali to provide information to the authorities so that investigations can be done quickly and the assailants held accountable.

In a similar vein, the Secretary-General also condemned the attack on Ethiopian troops at an African Union Mission (AMISOM) based in Halgan, Somalia.  He credits the AMISOM and the Somali National Army forces for repelling the attackers and commends them for their commitment to restoring durable security and stability in Somalia.

The Secretary-General asks the people of Somalia and their Government to remain resolute in the fight against Al0Shabaab and extremism as well as pledging the United Nation’s unwavering support in their efforts to build a peaceful and stable Somalia.
