The African Union Diaspora Africa Forum (AUDAF), with the support of the UN Global Compact, will host the African Women of Excellence Awards (AWEA) at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, NYC on Saturday, September 12, 2015. The Award ceremony will be preceded by a UN Women sponsored Roundtable session at the UN on Friday, September 11th. The goal of the closed session, which will be available on various web platforms, is to propel a movement of mentorship and solidarity towards social and economic empowerment among women.
AWEA’s awardees, includes Living Legends and Women of Excellence categories recognizing outstanding women of African descent from various disciplines and walks of life. The first recipients of the awards were Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former Malawi President Joyce Banda, and the former First Lady of Kenya, Mama Ngina Kenyatta, whom all received their awards in June during the African Union Summit in South Africa. Encouraged by the African Union Commission, who has recognized the African Diaspora as the 6th region, AUDAF has organized AWEA USA to honor the following outstanding women.
